About our Close Protection Top Up Training
This brand new 4 day course covers all of the requirements in order for you to maintain your SIA Close Protection licence.
After 1 October 2022, you need a First Aid at Work (FAW) qualification and the Close Protection Top-Up training to renew your licence. If you do not take the mandatory first aid & top up course before you apply to renew, your licence renewal application will be rejected.

Entry Requirements
To register for this Close Protection qualification, learners must:
- Be aged 18+
- Have the right to work in the UK
- Currently hold a valid First Aid at Work course certificate
- Currently hold a Security Officer SIA licence
- Be reasonably fit and healthy
- Have a good comprehension of the English language

Is this Close Protection Top Up security course for me?
To work in any security role in the UK including close protection, you must hold a valid licence granted by the Security Industry Authority (SIA).
It is a criminal offence to work without one or with an expired licence. Close Protection Operatives are required to take a top up course to be brought up to date with the new qualifications requirements.
The new SIA top up security training is now required as part of every Close Protection Officer’s career.
A top up course is not required every time you renew your licence, just when the SIA introduces new guidance.
Since this is a top-up refresher course, learners taking this course should previously have completed the full close protection course and wish to renew their licence. You can attend the top up course at any time (up to 3 years in advance) in preparation for the expiry of your current Close Protection licence. Applicants need to be over 18 and must have at least a reasonable health & fitness level due to the physical requirements of the role. You will also need to hold a FAW certificate.
Your SIA trainer will assess your skills with a mix of multiple choice exams and practical exercises.

How long is the Close Protection Top Up training?
The Close Protection top up training is a 4 day course. If you require the FAW (First Aid at Work) qualification, you can book a course with FAW to your package.
With the First Aid at Work training qualification, the course will be a total of 7 days.
Speak to our team for more information if you hold a FAW certificate with less than 1 years validity as you may be able to take a reduced 2 day Refresher course making the course total 6 days.
What will I learn during the top up course?
The training covers new content introduced by the SIA, including:
- Bespoke physical intervention skills
- Knowledge of door supervisor responsibilities (including protecting vulnerable people)
- Legislation, threat and risk management
- Personal skills, surveillance awareness, search procedures, foot drills, venue security, journey management reconnaissance and preparing and carrying out a close protection assignment
- Terror Threat Awareness
How do I book?
Before booking a place on one of our security courses, please determine whether you need a course that includes the First Aid qualification.
- If you do require FAW to be added to your package, choose an option from the course list above, with a green First Aid button.
- If you do not require FAW on your course as you already hold this qualification, choose an option above with a grey First Aid button.

Can I still work in close protection with a criminal record?
If you have a criminal record, it is still possible to renew your SIA Close Protection licence depending on the circumstances.
The Security Industry Authority will carry out a background check to look for things that may suggest you could be a risk to the public, or that you are not suitable to work in the industry, such as dishonest behaviour. Any convictions, warnings, cautions, absolute/conditional discharges, admonishments or charges awaiting trial for offences will need to be disclosed as part of your renewal application.
You are able to check the likelihood of passing the criminality checks with the SIA’s criminal record indicator.
Please be aware, you will automatically be rejected for a SIA licence unless you have been free of the sentence restrictions for a conviction for at least 12 months (up to 5 years in more serious cases) before your licence application.
